European table tennis enters a new chapter: Istanbul 2027 debuts mixed team event

With 266 days to go until the 4th European Games in Istanbul (16–27 June 2027), the table tennis qualification system has been confirmed by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) and the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU). A record 192 athletes — 96 men and 96 women — will compete from 16 to 22 June in men’s singles, women’s singles and the inaugural mixed team event. The 192-player figure is a significant jump from the 152 athletes in Kraków 2026. The mixed team competition, featuring 16 teams, appears for the first time at the European Games. Twelve teams qualify directly: the host nation and the top 11 NOCs in the European Mixed Team Ranking published on 6 November 2026. The remaining four places will be decided at a qualification event in Istanbul from 9 to 12 February 2027. Each team consists of three men, three women and one reserve per gender. The European Mixed Team Ranking combines each association’s best-ranked men’s and women’s singles players, its positions in the European team rankings, and its best men’s, women’s and mixed doubles results at the most recent European Individual Championships. In the singles events, 64 players per gender will compete. Every NOC with a qualified mixed team receives two places per gender, given to its two highest-ranked players on the ETTU European Singles Ranking of 9 April 2027. A further 31 places per gender go to the best-ranked players on the same ranking who are not already qualified, with a maximum of two per NOC. One universality place per gender will be allocated by the EOC together with ETTU. The highest stake: the mixed team gold medallists in Istanbul earn a direct quota for the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028. This gives the new format a strategic dimension rarely seen in continental multi-sport events. The ranking-based system rewards depth across genders, while the singles pathway still protects individual talent from smaller nations. Istanbul 2027 will test not only athletic performance but also the administrative and tactical maturity of every European federation.
