Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes are the two creators. Of six midfielders, only two are trained to break up play and screen the back four. If either of them picks up a booking or an injury, Portugal has no direct replacement.

What does this structure say about Martínez's intent?

It says Portugal will play by imposing the game. Funnel the ball wide, push the full-backs high, let Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva work the edge of the box, and let four forwards contest inside the eighteen-yard area. Against a packed defence, an eight-man attack is the rotation solution.

But the structure says the opposite too. This squad is built to take the lead, not to protect it. With one specialist holding midfielder on the pitch for most of the match, Portugal's back four is exposed every time the ball is lost in midfield. Teams capable of direct counter-attacking — the kind that switch play in three passes — are exactly the profile that hurts this structure most.

The blind spot in the official story
